Leafless, bleached, towering; it is the only shadow for miles and miles; unwavering and fragmented.
When the afternoon sinks, the white tree becomes aflame with sundown.
It might have been dreaming of the time when it had leaves, but it was long ago and the desert has not been any milder since then; but before, the people came to crown it with flowers. They watered it every day at dawn and sang sweet songs about its roots, fabled to sink deep into the core of the world. And the children climbed the branches and talked to it, and told it it was those branches where good intentions nested.
